Lead the delivery of secure, resilient cyber platforms that support Western’s digital future.
The Opportunity
As the Cyber Security Engineering Manager, you will lead the strategic uplift of cyber security engineering across Western Sydney University. You will oversee the design, build, integration, automation, and operation of enterprise security controls spanning hybrid cloud and on‑prem environments, ensuring platforms meet resilience, compliance, and reliability expectations. Your work will embed secure‑by‑design principles into engineering patterns, guardrails, and reference implementations that position Western for long-term digital strength.
You will play a key role in advancing the University’s defence against emerging cyber threats. This includes maturing the platforms that underpin IAM/PAM, EDR/XDR, SIEM/SOAR, WAF/CDN, DLP/CASB and more. Through integration of MITRE ATT&CK methodologies, IaC policy‑as‑code, hardened baselines, and automation standards, you will uplift control effectiveness, reduce operational complexity, and improve MTTD/MTTR outcomes.
Working closely with the Cyber Security Operations Director, you will partner across Digital Services, Enterprise Architecture, academic units, operations teams, and external cybersecurity partners. You will lead and develop specialist cyber engineers, ensuring clear responsibilities, quality expectations, and collaborative approaches with SOC and Incident Response functions.
What Success Looks Like:
- Deliver secure, scalable, and resilient security platforms across hybrid cloud and on‑prem environments.
- Standardise automation, baseline hardening, and policy‑as‑code guardrails to uplift compliance and control consistency.
- Lead and develop specialist engineers with clear RACI alignment across engineering, SOC, and IR functions.
- Improve cyber control effectiveness through measurable metrics such as coverage, configuration compliance, and MTTD/MTTR.
- Provide expert, threat‑informed advice on emerging technologies, tuning, and decommissioning aligned to MITRE ATT&CK.
