Portuguese software company building custom enterprise and AI-integrated systems, digital identity platforms, and the Linux Caixa Mágica distribution, including middleware for the national Citizen Card.
Caixa Mágica Software works on infrastructure where the failure mode is public. The Lisbon company, founded in 2004, developed the middleware behind the Portuguese Citizen Card - national identity software deployed to the entire Portuguese population - and built the Covid Pass system for INCM during the pandemic. Neither is a proof-of-concept; both shipped at country scale, under real scrutiny, with real users.
The practice around that work spans custom software development, enterprise applications, AI-integrated systems, digital identity platforms, and open-source software. It is also the team behind Linux Caixa Mágica, Portugal's longest-running Linux distribution, developed since 2000 - meaning Linux and open-source tooling are working knowledge, not a procurement checkbox. More than 100 projects delivered across government/public sector, healthcare, and enterprise environments back the claim, alongside over 20 years of operating history.
Day to day, the company runs agile methodologies and transparent collaboration, and it sells nearshore development and team augmentation to European clients, with presence in Portugal, Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. For engineers who want to work on identity systems and long-lived platform code rather than disposable products, that combination - national-scale identity delivery plus an open-source lineage - is the shape of the work.
