About

Lasers that can ignite fusion reactions are among the most complex engineered systems on the planet - megajoule-scale optics, sub-nanosecond timing, and control loops that have to work exactly once. Xcimer Energy is building them anyway. The Denver-based company's Phoenix prototype is the largest privately owned laser system in the world, housed in a 74,000-square-foot facility, demonstrating integrated operation of excimer amplification and Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) pulse compression. Their Long Pulse Kinetics Platform broke records by achieving the longest pulse in a KrF laser at 3 microseconds. The endgame: Athena, a laser fusion power plant targeting 400 megawatts of output by 2035.

The threat model for a company like this isn't hypothetical - it's every layer of the stack. Proprietary control systems orchestrate hardware that operates at extreme energy densities; intellectual property around pulse compression algorithms, beamline calibration, and fusion target design is the business. With nearly 200 people - engineers, physicists, and business professionals, many from MIT - the attack surface spans IT, OT, and research infrastructure. Downstream applications including AI training clusters, desalination, and industrial decarbonization mean the data and operational environments are varied and high-stakes.

Security here isn't bolted on; it's embedded in systems where failure modes are physical. If you've worked in environments where the network boundary includes things that can explode or where the ICS/SCADA layer controls multi-megajoule laser arrays, you understand the operational constraints. The company operates out of Denver and is focused on transforming proven fusion science into commercial technology with industry-leading execution.
