Stegra is a Swedish industrial company building digitalized green steel mills using green hydrogen and renewable electricity, starting with a 700 MW electrolyzer and integrated plant in Boden.
Stegra builds and operates greenfield green steel facilities, starting with a fully integrated, digitalized mill in Boden, northern Sweden - the first greenfield steel plant in Europe in 50 years. Founded in 2020, the Swedish industrial company is decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors by replacing coal with green hydrogen: a 700-megawatt on-site electrolyzer, powered by renewable electricity from the Lule River, feeds direct iron reduction, which feeds electric arc steelmaking. The stated target is 5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2030, with up to 95% lower emissions than conventional production.
For security practitioners, the interesting surface is the integration. Hydrogen production, electrolysis, DRI, steelmaking, renewable power intake, and raw materials logistics run as one platform rather than a set of isolated plants. That means IT/OT convergence is structural, not a retrofit: industrial digitalization is a core technical domain alongside process engineering, and the operational stakes include electrolyzer capacity, hydrogen handling, and continuous reduction processes that cannot simply be taken offline. The threat model covers a working industrial site in northern Sweden with a control layer tied to power supply, throughput, and safety-critical equipment, plus corporate and partner connectivity across a supply chain spanning raw materials, logistics, and offtake.
The workforce is international - more than 55 nationalities - and the company's stated culture emphasizes mission-driven work and fully integrated, digitalized operations. Offtake and technology partners include Porsche, Volvo Group, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Ingka Group, ZF, Marcegaglia, Microsoft, and thyssenkrupp. Locations: Boden and Stockholm, Sweden.
