Independent Electricity System Operator

Mississauga, Ontario, CA (Hybrid)1 open job

IESO is Ontario's independent not-for-profit electricity system operator, balancing supply and demand 24/7, dispatching suppliers, running wholesale electricity markets, and publishing market and price data.

The Independent Electricity System Operator runs the machine behind Ontario's electricity supply. Established under Ontario's Electricity Act, 1998, the not-for-profit entity balances supply and demand around the clock, issues dispatch instructions to electricity suppliers, directs power across the provincial transmission network, and operates the province's wholesale electricity market on behalf of ratepayers. That puts it at the center of a system where availability is the product: a control environment that cannot go down, and market and planning data that has to stay trustworthy.

The threat model is broad by construction. IESO's footprint spans power system operations and transmission network control, wholesale market operations and dispatch, resource forecasting, regional and bulk planning, procurement, ancillary services, and grid innovation work supporting an increasingly distributed electricity system. It also runs programs that touch customers directly - energy-efficiency programs for homes, businesses, and industry - and publishes extensive market, demand, supply, and price data publicly. Operational technology, market systems, program delivery infrastructure, and public-facing data publication each carry a different set of failure modes.

Reliability work here includes emergency preparedness, power restoration coordination, and system reliability functions carried out continuously. The stated priorities are reliability, affordability, and sustainability through Ontario's electricity transition, with a public-interest mandate and transparency as an operating principle. Geographic scope is Ontario, Canada. More detail at https://ieso.ca/.
