Fjernvarme Fyn

Denmark's third largest district heating company, supplying heat to over 200,000 citizens on Funen through a network of renewable and recovered-energy sources.

Fjernvarme Fyn runs one of Europe's largest district heating systems - a municipally-owned, non-profit utility that supplies roughly 97% of the heating in Odense and surrounding areas and serves more than 100,000 homes, businesses and institutions across Funen. That makes it critical infrastructure in practice, if not by self-description: heat delivery to over 200,000 citizens depends on continuously monitored and controlled physical plant, and the blast radius of any disruption is measured in households left cold.

The production side is where the attack surface gets interesting. Fjernvarme Fyn's heat generation is deliberately heterogeneous - waste-to-energy, straw and wood chips, recovered industrial excess heat, large electric boilers, and excess heat from Meta's data center in Odense. Each of those sources brings its own controls, vendors and interfaces, tied back into a single distribution network. The company reports a 40% reduction in its fossil climate footprint while maintaining strong financial results, so the operational tempo of that transition is real: new energy sources and new plant keep coming online.

Ownership sits with the municipalities of Odense (97%) and Nordfyn, with prices set to cover costs rather than generate shareholder returns. The stated direction is climate-neutral, robust and competitive district heating for generations to come - "robust" being the operative word for anyone thinking about the threat model. The company employs just under 400 people and operates across Odense, Nordfyn and the rest of Funen, Denmark.
