EnBW

EnBW is a publicly traded integrated energy company headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, and one of the largest energy providers in Germany and Europe. It operates across the full energy value chain - electricity and gas trading, renewable and conventional generation, grid operation, energy supply, district heating, water supply, and e-mobility - for roughly 5.5 million customers, with a workforce of about 31,500. That scope is the threat model in one sentence: an operator where trading platforms, control systems, physical generation assets, distribution networks, and customer-facing services all sit inside the same corporate perimeter.

The technical surface is unusually broad. EnBW runs electricity and gas grids, conventional and renewable generation, offshore wind - including the 960 MW He Dreiht project - solar, energy storage, hydrogen-ready power plants, intelligent EV charging, and energy-management products. Each of these brings a different stack and a different risk profile: market and billing systems that handle transactional data, operational technology that keeps electrons and water moving, and increasingly connected endpoints from charge points to storage assets. Securing that means working across IT and OT domains rather than treating them as separate worlds.

The company is mid-transformation and says so. It plans to invest up to €50 billion by 2030, primarily in Germany, in grid expansion, renewables, hydrogen-ready plants, and e-mobility, with a target of around 80% renewables in the generation portfolio by 2030 and net-zero corporate greenhouse-gas emissions by 2040. For security work, that translates into new infrastructure arriving continuously - new plants, new networks, new connected services - under the constraints that come with regulated critical infrastructure across Germany and Europe.
